Overview
The Tapo D230S1 presents a budget-friendly doorbell camera solution, boasting sharp 2K video and AI-driven motion alerts. However, it lacks finer customisation found in pricier models—most notably, limited motion detection zones and no wired power option. It’s a solid choice for straightforward needs, but not without compromises.
Our Hands-On Experience
During testing, the Tapo D230S1 impressed us with its crisp daytime footage and surprisingly clear night vision. Setup was straightforward thanks to its battery-powered design—ideal for renters or DIYers. However, the bulkier build and occasional false alerts due to the lack of custom detection zones stood out. Frequent battery recharging might also frustrate some users, especially in high-traffic areas.
Pros
- Exceptional 2K 5MP video quality for clear footage
- Hassle-free battery-powered installation
- Supports local storage up to 512GB via microSD
- Weatherproof IP64 build suitable for Irish climate
- AI-powered motion detection distinguishes between people or animals
Cons
- Chunky design may not suit all homes
- Battery-only power requires regular recharging
- No customisable motion detection zones
- Limited integration with broader smart home ecosystems
How It Compares
Compared to it's market competitors such as Ring doorbell, Eufy and Blink, Tapo seems to fall between strengths. As a cheaper option Crimestats would recommend the Blink Doorbell, for the top-end quality we would aim for Eufy or Ring. This kind of leaves Tapo in no-mans-land for us.
Final Verdict
Overall, we found this product to be too expensive to be our 'low cost' choice, and too limited in features to be our 'top choice'. It's a good middle ground, but we would recommend looking at the Blink Doorbell for a cheaper option, or the likes of Eufy or Ring for more premium options.
